Pratt & Whitney Excellence Award goes to HYDRO

Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture, and service of aircraft engines and auxiliary power units. Pratt & Whitney's large commercial engines power more than 25 percent of the world’s passenger aircraft fleet and serve more than 800 customers in 160 countries. With more than 16,000 large commercial engines installed today, Pratt & Whitney provides power to hundreds of airlines and operators, from narrow-bodied airplanes to wide-bodied jumbo jetliners.

HYDRO is proud to be a tooling supplier for Pratt & Whitney for more than 10 years so far. The engine manufacturer, headquartered in Connecticut in the USA, gives its Excellence Award every year to suppliers with an annual average delivery performance that exceeds 90 %. 2019 was the first year that HYDRO was recognized with the Excellence Award for outstanding performance.

Strict quality requirements

In addition to on time deliveries, Pratt & Whitney has strict requirements for the tooling quality. In fact, both tools and their packaging, must conform 100 % to drawings and quality standard requirements, with specifications going as far as to define the thickness of packaging cardboard and the maximum weight of a tool that is allowed to be packed in a cardboard box.

Visual order management as the key to success

The introduction of visual order management, or VOM in HYDRO, can be credited with a significant role in helping meet these strict requirements. VOM ensures that every single job is fully transparent and receives undivided attention. On a daily basis, interdisciplinary teams from Engineering, Production, Purchasing, and Logistics from various locations worldwide analyze tool orders that stand out due to the tiniest deviations so that they can come up with fast solutions. The fact that employees from different departments are involved in production and delivery are sitting around the table results in pragmatic and quick solutions. Moreover, this establishes transparency for all stakeholders while significantly improving delivery performance.

In 2019, the new strategy made it possible to deliver increasing tool numbers exclusively to Pratt & Whitney for its V2500 engine, as well as to MROs for the Pratt & Whitney GTF engine.
